Understanding Your Vedic Birth Chart

What is a Janam Kundli?

A Janam Kundli is a snapshot of the heavens at your birth, drawn as a square or circular chart with twelve houses. Each house represents a life theme — self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, partnership, transformation, dharma, career, gains and liberation. Planets placed in these houses, and the signs they occupy, describe the raw material of your life. In the Indian tradition the Kundli is not fortune-telling; it is a diagnostic tool that reveals patterns of karma, strengths to build on and challenges to prepare for.

How is a Kundli calculated?

Calculating a Kundli begins with converting your local birth time to Universal Time using the timezone of your birthplace. That timestamp becomes a Julian Day, from which sidereal time and the Ascendant degree are derived using the latitude and longitude of the birth city. Planetary longitudes are then computed with the Swiss Ephemeris, the Lahiri ayanamsa is subtracted to move from tropical to sidereal coordinates, and each planet is placed into its Rashi, Nakshatra, pada and house. Divisional charts, Dasha periods and Yogas are all derived from this foundation.

Why is Birth Time important?

Birth time is the single most sensitive input in a Vedic chart. The Ascendant advances by roughly one degree every four minutes, so a ten-minute error can shift the Lagna to a neighbouring sign and rewrite the entire house structure. Since predictions about career, marriage and health depend heavily on which houses the planets fall in, an accurate time is essential. If your recorded time is uncertain, an astrologer can perform birth-time rectification by matching known life events against candidate Ascendants.

What is Lagna?

Lagna, the Ascendant, is where the ecliptic meets the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It is the doorway of the chart — the sign that governs the first house and colours everything else. Aries Lagna produces a pioneering, energetic personality; Taurus Lagna a steady, sensory one; Gemini a curious communicator, and so on through the twelve signs. The strength and placement of the Lagna lord is one of the first things any competent astrologer examines when reading a birth chart.

What is Moon Sign?

The Moon Sign or Rashi is the zodiac sign the Moon occupies at birth. Because the Moon rules the mind and emotions in Vedic astrology, the Rashi is treated as the emotional Lagna and is used for daily horoscopes, name-syllable selection and Dasha calculation. Where the Sun Sign describes ego and vitality, the Moon Sign describes your inner world — how you feel, respond and remember. Reading Kundli, Sun and Moon together gives a fuller portrait than any single indicator.

What is a Navamsa Chart?

The Navamsa or D9 chart is generated by dividing each 30° sign into nine 3°20' segments and mapping each segment to a full sign. Every planet in your Lagna chart therefore gains a Navamsa sign, which reveals its true internal strength. Classical astrologers say the Navamsa is the fruit of the tree that the Lagna chart plants, and it is especially critical for marriage analysis, dharma and the second half of life. A planet that is dignified in both D1 and D9 is called Vargottama and delivers powerful, stable results.

What are Yogas?

Yogas are the recurring planetary patterns catalogued in classical texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Some — such as Gaja Kesari (Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon) or Chandra Mangal (Moon and Mars conjunct) — form easily and appear in millions of charts, while others like the Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas are rare and mark exceptional lives. Reading Yogas is a craft: their strength depends on the dignity of the planets involved, the houses they influence and whether their period is active in the current Dasha.

What are Doshas?

Doshas are afflictions that indicate friction in specific life areas. Mangal Dosha stresses the marriage house; Kaal Sarp Dosha suggests a lopsided karmic distribution; Sade Sati marks Saturn's transformative seven-and-a-half-year transit over the natal Moon; Pitra Dosha points to unresolved ancestral karma. Doshas are not curses — they are patterns to be understood and worked with. Classical remedies range from mantra recitation and specific charitable acts to gemstone therapy and pilgrimage.

What is Vimshottari Mahadasha?

The Vimshottari Mahadasha system times the unfolding of the promises made by your birth chart. Its starting point is the exact longitude of the Moon within its Nakshatra at birth, and it proceeds through fixed periods of the nine planets totalling 120 years. Each Mahadasha is subdivided into Antardashas and further into Pratyantardashas, giving astrologers a fine-grained calendar for career shifts, relationships and health events. Your Divyadrishti report shows the full sequence so you can align major decisions with supportive periods.

How accurate is Swiss Ephemeris?

Swiss Ephemeris is derived from NASA's JPL DE431 planetary data and is the reference implementation used by professional astrologers, universities and scientific software worldwide. For dates between 1800 and 2400 CE its planetary positions are accurate to well under an arc-second — orders of magnitude finer than any traditional almanac. Divyadrishti runs a WebAssembly build directly in your browser, so calculations happen on your own device with no data leaving your session.

How to read your birth chart?

Start with the Lagna and its lord — where is that planet placed, and is it strong? Next look at the Moon, its Nakshatra and its house. Then scan the seven visible planets for dignity: exalted, own-sign, friendly, neutral, enemy or debilitated. Identify active Yogas and any Doshas. Finally, note the current Mahadasha and Antardasha lords and see which houses they rule and occupy — this tells you which life themes are being activated right now. Reading a Kundli is a dialogue, not a verdict; use it as a mirror for reflection.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Janam Kundli

A Janam Kundli, also called a Vedic birth chart or Janam Patrika, is a personalised astrological map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It records the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, the twelve houses and the Ascendant (Lagna), and forms the basis of every prediction in Vedic astrology — from personality traits and career direction to marriage, health and spiritual purpose. Unlike a generic sun-sign horoscope, a Kundli is unique to you and is calculated from your date, time and place of birth using sidereal astronomy.

About Divyadrishti

Divyadrishti is a modern Vedic astrology platform built on classical texts and precision astronomy. Our team combines decades of practical Jyotish experience with software engineering, so every chart you generate is faithful to the tradition of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Jaimini Sutras and Phaladeepika while being computed with the accuracy of NASA-grade ephemerides.

Methodology: we use the Swiss Ephemeris (JPL DE431 based) for planetary longitudes, the Lahiri ayanamsa endorsed by the Indian Government Calendar Reform Committee, Placidus and Whole Sign house systems where appropriate, and the Vimshottari Mahadasha for timing.

Privacy: your birth details never leave your device. All calculations run in your browser via WebAssembly, and we do not require an account to generate a Kundli.
